In Choreo Archive, we challenge the very idea of what an archive is built around and what it is meant to accomplish: the preservation, protection, and control of past thoughts, stories, identities, and bodies. A place for mapping and preserving the traces and embodied knowledge of one another. It is a space where we propagate practices and where we continue to develop the traces and artistic thinking of others. By subverting archival space, meaning, and intention, choreography archives test their unsettling possibilities. The workshop explores how performance practices can be used as archive methods by reenacting and exploring intrinsic media. The sessions included a general introduction to the importance of personal dance archiving, an overview of practical tools and tips to care for personal material, as well as hands-on activities to help participants get started in thinking about caring for their own archive. How to value archives in a different way.
